Hari, if you look at any open information or open sharing or for that matter, FOSS project - remember that the effort being put may be, in a matter of speaking, humanitarian. But the resources used are not free or paid for by the person who is taking all the effort - but I will not deny that a lot of people who take to the Open Culture movement are spending their own money, time and resources for the benefit of mankind. This is a great idea, but the inherent problem is that it cannot be self-sustaining (unless it breaks the laws of thermodynamics!).
"Looky here, city boy. Huge internet hosting space ain't growin' on trees." Considering that most of the organization is run by volunteers, they still need people to do work, and servers and internet rights, licensing etc. That costs a lot of money (especially on a global scale). So I don't find anything revoltingly wrong about the appeal made. But I do think they could have simply left it as a link from the main page that says 'Donate/Support' - as do most Open projects.

On a probably pragmatic, yet morbidly myopic point of view, hey, it's tax-deductible! Come to the US and you will understand how useful that is ;-)

perfectly understood.. i think my comment was taken in the wrong sense.. so its reworded now :)..

and im sure there'll be lots out there now who're willing to contribute to the largest encyclopaedia in the world..
